Our Foster Care Program

Elon Homes and Schools for Children’s community-based foster care program provides refuge, within a licensed family setting, for children who need a safe place to live when their parents cannot adequately care for them. We serve children, ages 0 – 21, in roughly a dozen North Carolina counties from Mecklenburg to Durham, and we accept referrals from any North Carolina Department of Social Services.

Children in foster care require special support and nurturing. Many foster children have a damaged sense of self-worth. Some have been victims of abuse or neglect. At Elon Homes and Schools for Children, we recruit compassionate foster parents and provide extensive training to help them deliver the best care possible. Our case coordinators ensure that foster families have 24/7 access to support.

One Story of Many . . . Alice & Alan

EHSC’s foster care program provides safe haven to many children in dire situations. When twins Alice and Alan were born prematurely, they needed special care that their mother—living in substandard housing at the time—could not provide. When the babies were discharged from the hospital, still very frail and requiring breathing machines, we placed them with one of our licensed foster families.

The foster parents provided excellent care for the twins, who began to grow and require less medical attention. As case plan milestones were met, we initiated and monitored shared parenting between the foster parents and the twins’ birth mother. As a result of the good case management and relationships involved, the twins were eventually reunited with their mother. Today, the twins are thriving and still have social contact with the EHSC foster family that helped them so significantly.
