Volunteering &
Mentoring Opportunities
Volunteering
Community involvement has made a difference in many of our residents
outlooks on life. There are many people within our community who go the
extra mile to help us help our children. As much as possible, volunteer
hours are arranged for the convenience of each individual or group of
volunteers. Volunteers often sponsor special events and bring gifts during
the holiday season. Volunteers also give lectures; serve as homework buddies;
and sponsor games, cookouts and refreshments for residents throughout
the year.
Mentoring
The Mentoring Program at Kennedy Campus provides the residents of Elon
Homes for Children the opportunity to develop a healthy and lasting relationship
with an adult in the community.
Mentors are paired with residents that share similar interests, backgrounds,
and gender. All prospective mentors must complete an application that
is used to obtain specific background information. Criminal background
and reference checks are done on all prospective mentors. The Mentoring
Program Coordinator will conduct an orientation and initial training session
that will address any questions or concerns the mentor might have.
When the first six weeks of the relationship is proceeding in a positive
direction, visits can begin to take place off-campus. Mentors are expected
to maintain contact with the Mentoring Coordinator for support and assistance
throughout the duration of their involvement. This program is unique because
it allows both parties the opportunity to experience growth.
